I read a story (please forgive me, I remember the story but not the source) about a university professor who began her first lecture of the school year by challenging her student’s focus. She stood before the class holding a large white poster with a small black dot in the lower right- hand corner. She queried her students as to what she was holding in her hands. A typical response was: A small black dot in the lower right-hand corner of the poster. The professor challenged her students, saying: "You saw what you chose to see. You could have described a large empty white space -- large enough for the Gettysburg Address, the Ten Commandments, or the Bill of Rights. Instead you focused on a small black dot sitting in the corner of an otherwise clean, white poster." |
